  1. A letter from Abi's parents

Today I received a letter from Abi's parents wanting me to let everyone know how touching her on-line friends' well-wishes were to them. Everyone's messages were very appreciated. They are of course, still in shock but they are finding comfort in Abi's friends and reminiscing about the good times. Thank you, everyone.

Sarah, My heart goes out to her family and friends. I think when you tune into a board as much as one does here you really can get a sense of what a person is like. Although this was only a small slice of her life I like to think that I knew her a little. For those her really knew her my heart aches for you. She seemed witty, intellegent, and gracious. I only wish I had met her, she would be the person I would be proud to call my friend. Michelle

I was very sorry to hear of Abi's passing...it was a great shock!!! I traded many times with her & enjoyed her mixes & artwork!!! As for a tribute...wouldn't it be nice if all of her posts were unarchived & professionally bound, including pictures she drew & give this to her parents & brother? I know they are hurting now...in the future they will look at that & be glad they have a rememberance of all she did & meant here!!! Any Feedback? Robert

Hello everyone. I am planning on doing a tribute to/for Abi & her family & friends. All suggestions can be sent to (of course) mailto:abi@themonkees.com . I am so sad that she is gone, it's just terrible. I've asked her family what we can do for her. She was one of the main strengths of this board. You could Always depend on her great wit & intelligence to liven the place up. Phil

Hmm...I'll have to give this some thought because it deserves to be something really great. I'm thinking that her family might enjoy hearing some of our favorite Abi stories...things she said or did to help us or make us laugh. A lot of us will have something to share. We can compile our stories along with a few touching words and send them to her family. I really don't want to make them burst into tears. I'd like to see if we can bring smiles to their faces. Hopefully, they'll find comfort in the fact that Abi touched so many of our hearts.

Abi was a great artist. Does anyone have any of her pictures that she drew that they could scan or something to add to the stories? I have some and I know she sent them out at Christmas to quiz takers, etc.

I have a pic called Monkees Friendships she made from 2001. I also remember a 4th of July one and a Christmas one, but I can't find them...perhaps they were on line? I also have the flip book that we sent around, do you remember filling it out Sean, Doo, Lor, and Christy? In it she wrote, "Friends are people who trust each other. People who forgive in a blink of an eye. People who do things for one another. People who are YOU!" What a trip though, going through my letters from Abi. What a sweet soul she was. Especially touching was a letter to me from her hospital days over two years ago. She was praising life and was so happy to get out of that horrible experience. So sad it couldn't last. My favorite is her last words in the flip book. She wrote to me, "If we are siamese twins, where are we joined?" Oh Abi, I'll miss you so much!!!

Those booklets we made Sarah...sadly, mine was lost in the mail. Sean said she had a Piglet pin for me, because she knew I liked Piglet stuff. I found some cards last night from her. Teresa, I would appreciate it if your would email me any pics you have that she drew. I could print these out if Phil needs me to or whatever I can do to help.

Abi's funeral was today. According to her friend, Lisa, they played a song by The Damned, one of Abi's favorite groups, as people came in. They played Daydream Believer in the middle, and a Big Country song, another favorite group of hers, at the end. Some of our posts were read aloud at the service. I really wish I could have gone. Okay maybes not the most interesting thing to read but EMI is in very early talks with Warner to buy out their music buisness....... So what? you may ask well Warner own Rhino as part of their music bits...... Of course it might just mean the music side of things of bands going today, and of course it might just fade away. But it would be interesting to know what would happen to Rhino if another company got hold of them and how it would effect us as Monkees fans.

Well the whole issue of Universal dropping their wholesale price down and lowering their standard CD price closer to $9.99 and also knocking off their point-of -purchase promos (which is where the big money is for retail stores) is gonna change the way music is bought and sold. It's just the next step towards killing off the rest of the small and independent cool record shops and small chains. Everyone in the business keeps talking that in 5 years CDs will be no more, we'll all be downloading SINGLES..death to the album..Sure it's paranoia, but a lot of retail stores are starting to feel the heat and it doesnt look pleasant. I find it interesting they'll trying to tell me I would rather have a compressed sounding file format then a real tangible CD with great sound quality, liner notes and cover art. Just when Sony's trying to sell SACD's to everyone , which cool 5.1 mixes, along with 24 bit stereo mixes to boot, the industry is saying no one wants that, they want a shitty mp3 with copying restictions and spyware file format downloaded to their freaking Ipod. Forget albums...So where those The Monkees stand in all of this? EMI wants Warner so, they can compete with Universals new plans. They dont want to sell to retail CDs that cost to produce. They want you to pay for each song in their catalog and they want to tell you how and when you can play it. They want to kill used CD sales , hell they want to kill CDs altogether. So for The Monkees and every other music fan out there..it's a different industry being built with new rules right now. Expect to be paying more for a lot less. Chris

Point 1:The Monkees didn't split in 2001 they went on as Davy and Micky until 2002 when they just fizzeled out as is the norm. Point 2 Peter decided to leave well before September arrived so that had nothing to do with anything. Point 3 The 2kees respected the backing bands wishes not to fly after Sept 11 until 2002 when they came over to Britain. Point 4: All the Monkees have quit formally at one point Micky did it in 1989 so doesn't really consider himself the head honcho Monkee....

Not sure how many of you listen to the nationally syndicated radio show Bob and Tom, but David Bowie was on today. here is what they have posted: FACTOID - David Bowie wanted to go by the name Davey Jones (His real name) but was forced to change it after finding out it might be a bit confusing with the lead singer of The Monkees already using that moniker.

Actually he did go under that name for a fair bit it being his, but he wasn't well known his early stuff didn't sell. Then when the Monkees got huge he had to change it. It has to be the best thing to happen for him as he's massive still now nad Davy Jones isn't.

Well not quite but....... Never Mind The Buzzcocks had Hewey on and in the intros round the team he was on had Last Train to perform and his impression of Davy was something to behold believe me. The tamborine mime was good enough but when he did the Davy dance..... shock of the performance is Dick Valentine [Electric Six], to whom it was being performed to, & extreamly well mostly they are pants, claims never to have heard of The Monkees..... Has he been living under a rock? If doped up Hewey knows of them and the Davy dance surely Dick should too! Thought I had to share cause I have a sad life.

I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.

The Disney Channel in the UK and their Disney + no doubt are to start up showing The Monkees again after the summer holidays when kids are less likely to watch them. They are running episodes on Saturday and Sunday at 7.30am & 11pm [+ will be an hour after I believe, this is how it works I think.] They have been listed thus in both TV & Satelitte Week & Radio Times. [I'm sure they have 11pm but it oculd br 11.30pm whatever it's still kind of late!] They are a must see due to the Too Many Girls eppi having a different print to what we've normally had in recent years and also for the Peculiar version of Frodis!

Hello, I have been looking through the posts people have been sending for our Abi & have been finding it very helpful. I have saved many of them & am going to print them out to show my Mam & Dad. They already know - as do I - how well liked (& loved) she was by you all but, reading the posts will be a great help. I've been trying to email many of her online friends from a big list I found in her room, but our Abi's writing is a bit hard to read & a few of the emails are coming back to me as undelivered. Sorry if you are one of them. Before I go I'd just like to thank you all for being such a big & invaluable part of our Abi's life. She loved you all so much. I would love to hear from anyone who would like to talk, my email is; cheryl.iain@ntlworld.com I may take a while to answer as we are all very busy trying to tie up our Abi's affairs & such. Thanks again & lots of love- Iain & Cheryl.

Since things are kinda slow here today I thought I would share my favorite Abi memory and I hope some of the rest of you will do the same! One summer Abi and I did a trade of Monkees things... I had sent her a Pool It promo poster so she sent me Davy's mutant Monkees book. It turns out there was a pic of me on the fans page! How cool was it that Abi, my Monkee-twin sending me something so special like that!! My second favorite memory has to be when we all went on voice chat and I got to hear how her British accent sounded...also how funny Doo's and 86's southern accents were!! LOL Good times!!! : ) Anyone else care to share?

Sarah, I remember that voice chat well, however, I don't recall Doo's and my Southern accents being funny <cough> Just kidding ;) That chat would have to be one of my favorite memories too because she said "Helloooooo Christy!"...lol. I sent her a box full...FULL...of American stuff like Hershey's chocolate and she specifically requested Southern-related items...lol. She hated the Hershey's chocolate, but loved the Southern stuff...lol. I could always be really weird with her and she always came back to the chats the next day...lol. Could I "lol" any more?? She sent me all kinds of Cadbury's chocolate which totally ruled. She always sent the coolest stuff for my birthday and Christmas. I will always cherish my Clanger :)

I know I haven't been here in forever. I was one of the first to find out yesterday of her passing, and I have to say that besides the fact that I am in utter shock, I am also very upset. I was rather close with Abi, and she had to have been one of my closest "online" friends. It went beyond that in lots of ways, and I didn't look at her like that. She was Abi was England...my buddy across the ocean. Sarah informed me moments after she found out, and I was and have been pretty much in hysterics over it. It just doesn't seem right, or that it was her time to go. She will be missed more than she or anyone could ever realize on my end. She was my sarcastic British "trollop" whom I loved and adored so much. I just wish I was able to have spoken more to her the week she got ill...it all happened too suddenly....

I regret that I let my life get so busy lately that I haven't had time to talk to my closest online friends like Abi, Christy, Sarah, and Sean. I regret that I never got around to sending Abi her Christmas present last year. I'd got her some glitter make up and orange eye shadow. I regret that I put things off until they are too late. I regret that I never told Abi what a great person she was and what a difference she made in my life. I regret that we never got together and saved up to send Abi a plane ticket to come to the US as some of us had talked about in the past. I would have loved to have met her in person. She always remembered me at Christmas and my birthday and even helped me lose a ton of weight recently. This is my first time online since I heard the news and frankly, I've been avoiding coming to the board because I knew it would be upsetting. I just read all the wonderful posts about Abi and am sitting here crying again. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. It's still so unreal. Manda

'Manda, she knew what was going on in your life so don't feel any regrets. I wish we could have gotten her here too...she would have loved New Orleans. Her sense of humor (she would correct me and say it was humour) is what I will miss most. She was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. It's obvious she contributed a great deal to this board by the length of this thread. I asked her friend, Lisa, if we could put a picture of Abi up as a memorial, but she didn't think Abi would like that too much. For those of us who knew her well, that was our Abi! :) She would probably call me a bint for even suggesting it...lol. Her parents are holding up as best as they can. She was a generous, kind person and it hurts to think she is gone.

86, I thought of putting a picture up too and immediately thought better. Abi would definitely have beat us up for that! : ) I miss her terribly and it's been very hard these last two days. It's good to know we are all here to support each other. Doo, I absolutely feel the same way you do.

I posted before but I am still in shock about Abi! She was SO helpful in getting quizzes out, giving me pointers on things. Her humor came out in all e-mails sent to me. I do think she would have loved USA if she ever came over here. I know we both trading Monkee stuff. I never met her personally but I do feel I had a friend in jolly 'ol England. I will miss her deeply, even though I only was an elf for a year and worked with her in such a short time. Eileen

Christy, I am with you on that. It was nice to get an e-mail from her brother today, although it was sad. I have a card and I know I need to send it, but I just don't want to admit to myself that she's gone. She's kept me company (among you others) almost every afternoon for the last 2-3 years. I could share dreams and secrets about me that I never shared with anyone else. It's so hard to lose a friend like this.

  27. Peter & James NEW Live Album

Hi all, I checked Peter Tork's website and found this bit of information: "Updated September 23, 2003: THIS JUST IN ...Peter will be joining forces with James Lee Stanley to perform as Two Man Band in Alta Dena, CA in November. Word is that it's for a future "live" album ..." I wonder what this live album will contain. Perhaps a best of "Two Man Band" and "Once Again"? I hope this is not the case. "Once Again" barely got any promotion as Peter became involved with the Monkees again during its release than this was followed by heavy involvement with Shoe Suede Blues. From what I recall Peter and James played a few dates promoting "Once Again" but not many. In my opinon they should tour to promote this album and not worry about another one. I'm hoping that they release the solo sets of each individual. James did this a few years ago with "Freelance Human Being" but I'd love to see him do it again and include Peter's set as a second CD. Finally with regards to the live element of the album, didn't PT and JLS go into record "Two Man Band" initially because they didn't trust the sound systems in venues? I'd assuem James could provide a studio to record the album in so why go live? If a CD is released I hope it is as enjoyable as their last two releases. Any thoughts anyone? Barry

Actually I'd like to see what a 'proper' live CD of these two will sound like, the ones I have sound fine but surely this will have better production and won't end up like the live SSB stuff which sound a little flat to the ear.

Makes me smile though as I love the guy and have said as much many times.......... Mind you it's not saying much for taste over here considering what HAS been at #1 the past 5 weeks..... I'm sure it's a cover...... So what has this got to do with The Monkees? Ask Mr Tork about his inspiration there is a link tenous yes...... Oh and concerning Bewitched Charlies Angels [Columbia product] had Robert Freddy Englund in it the other day.......

ONLY # 5!?? The guy has been dead for 26 years and the song is 10 years older than that! I'd say #5 is remarkable! Personally, I don't think the song is as good as the last one and they butchered it with the song production and hokey video. 'Let Yourself Go' would have been a much better song choice. The new CD copllection 'Second to None' comes out today (I think). Let's just hope RCA/BMG doesn't burn E out.

I was watching the Monkees doing the early version of this song......Does anyone prefer it over the HQ version? To me it sounds too "produced" and too perfect (even with that annoying mistake in the bass part during the end of the bridge). Perhaps knowing that the HQ version is all four of them lends weight to the exhuberance of the particular performance. Anyone have any comments about this or any other "Monkees Produced" versions of songs vs the earlier orginals?

And does it matter that the earlier version is titled And You May Just Be The One in the episode? Apparantly it does as the song is copywritten under both monikers.

It bothers me when the first version speeds up in at the bridge. The Headquarters version is better for that alone - and it is a warmer recording (I agree the first version is cold). One thing that bothers me about Headquarters songs is Davy's out of sync tam-boring. It is horrible in No Time, as if he gets tired of playing fast and changes speed constantly - it ruins the song for me (it's all I can hear when I listen to it - I wish I could tune it out, but it too over the top of the recording). Chip should have tracked Davy's part as an overdub, then Davy could have given a better performance. I guess some purest like the live feel of the Headquarters tracks. I would have prefered a more perfectionist approach - but that arguement takes me away from the fact I like the second version of YJMBTO better. Six on one, half a dozen on the other.
